How often can I get meals delivered?

Meals are delivered Monday – Friday at lunch (between 11am and 1pm) and at supper (between 4pm and 6pm). You can order as many or as few meals as you need. For example; some people get a meal every day at lunch, while others choose to just get supper once a week. We can customize your schedule to suit your needs!

What does the meal consist of?

Each meal consists of a starter (soup or salad), entrée and dessert, and varies depending on the day of the week. For example:

o   Pasta Monday: Garden Salad, Lasagna, whole wheat roll and fruit cup

o   Traditional Tuesday: Vegetable Corn Chowder, BBQ pineapple chicken with mashed and vegetables and a zucchini muffin

o   Wild Wednesday: Garden Salad, Mini Vegetable Pizzas on whole wheat crust, beef and barley soup and a chocolate chip muffin

o   Trio Thursday (Soup, salad, sandwich): Chicken Noodle Soup, Egg Salad Sandwich on whole wheat, pasta salad and a ginger snap cookie

o   Fish Friday: Broccoli and cheddar soup, baked haddock with scalloped potato and steamed vegetables and a fruit cup for dessert

Our meals are balanced according to Canada’s Food Guide and aim to meet 1/3 of the recommended dietary allowances for seniors. You can view our menu here. Please note that this menu is a guide and is therefore subject to change. The themed days, however, will remain the same.

Who prepares the meals?

Our menu has been developed by a registered dietician, and is continually monitored and improved. The meals are prepared by a licenced cook and helpful volunteers in the Better Bite Community Kitchen, located at the New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation.

How is New Dawn Meals on Wheels funded?

Funding for New Dawn Meals on Wheels is provided by New Dawn Enterprises, the United Way of Cape Breton and the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services. In addition to this funding, the program is financed through payments from recipients and donations from individuals and groups.

Donations can be made in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special event. We are honoured to be able to send a personalized card to recognize these contributions.
